How to Create a Cottage Core Renaissance Costume: A Mystic Maker Guide to A Whimsical Look
Planning my outfit
Cottagecore Day at the Renfair
As I was planning for my annual trip to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire I noticed the day I picked happend to be the “cottagecore” themed day. I have never been on a themed day, but dove into the idea of creating a cottagecore-inspired outfit.
Core Cottagecore Elements
When I think of cottagecore, I think of nature, woodland elements, and fairy folk. I used this to guide my outfit planning. Here are the key elements that I think create that type of vibe.
Layers and Textures
Layering garments and finding a variety of textures make for a more interesting outfit. I layered a cream dress over a green skirt. I think finding something wispy-looking or something that has elements of lace is great for cottagecore vibes. This dress and skirt were purchased from Scarlet Darkness; they have the best basics! Trinkets
Trinkets are perfect for cottagecore and the Renaissance Fair. Not only do many people trade and give out trinkets, but it is also a fun way to dress up your outfit and add that sense of whimsy. I created a trinket belt that I dangled from my leather belt. It was basically a chain where I attached things I had on hand, such as keys, buttons, mini potion bottles, feathers, etc.
Nature Elements
When I think of cottagecore, I think of nature. You can incorporate nature in many ways into your outfit. I decorated my hat with floral pieces. I added flowers to my hair, and I decorated a basket with flowers that I used as my purse.
Accessories
I feel like more is more with this look. Here are some additional things you can add to your outfit.
Fairy wings
Nature-inspired jewelry
Items hanging from your belt, such as potions, pouches, flowers, and additional props
Hats and headpieces. I created this witchy hat for the event, but any kind of sun hat, floral crown, or hood would be a great addition and provide some sun protection.
